HOW TO: Sports Valentines Box Toppers

Box Toppers

My son is a huge football fan so for his Valentines I wanted to create a field printable that I could easily adhere and decorate around. Here is the original box we did:

After he came home and it was such a hit with his 4th grade class and teacher, I knew the next year I wanted to add it to the Etsy shop to see if it could be useful for others too. So I recreated his original box (much improved 😅) and created options for the other sports. I could have never dreamed of the support it would get, and grateful doesn't even come close to describing how I felt knowing others loved it as much as I did! This year, I wanted to create the blog and video tutorials to help you out with any humps you may come across when creating your Valentine's sports box!

Check out the tutorial below for all the details on how to score big and create your own this year!

FIRST UP, YOUR BOX:

Before you print and assemble, you will want to pick your box and measure it. Once you know the dimensions of the top of the box, you can pick your printable! Each sport design comes with 3 size options:

  • 8½x11''
  • 11x14''
  • 11x17''

It is fairly unlikely that your box will fit one of these sizes perfectly, so pick the one that is closest. You can pick a larger size and trim around to make it fit or pick a smaller size and have a border around (like many of the sample photos shown).

This is also where you will want to paint your box if you'd like to! I spray painted my box and it took 3 coats, but you could also just have your little one help out and paint it instead.

STEP 1  → Pick Your Printable

We offer the editable instant downloads here on brieezyboutique.com or in our Etsy shop. Once ordered, you should receive an email from Corjl with your link to edit! Demos for each box topper are available on their listings for purchase.

When editing your topper, keep in mind if you will be needing to cut a hole for Valentines to enter. Ours latched opened, so we just used that. However if you will be wanting to add one you may want to adjust the position of your child's name before downloading and printing.

    STEP 2  → Printing & Cutting

Once you've edited your box toppers and have downloaded your printable files, it's time to print. Whether you are printing from home or your local office supply print lab (such as Office Depot, Staples, Kinkos, etc.), a variety of papers work great for this project! I would personally recommend any white or bright white paper over #60. The thicker the paper, the more durable it will feel. My personal favorite to use is a glossy cover stock!

If you printed a sports topper that needs to be cut down to fit your box, now is the time to do that if you haven't. You can cut by hand or use most craft cutters! Some may be too small depending on your size choice.

STEP 3 → Preparing Your Box

Now that your box is ready and your printable is the right size, it's time to put it all together! I would recommend a craft glue or hot glue, as they are fast drying and most do not seep through cardstock too much. But you could absolutely use tape, glue dots or other adhesive to seal your topper to your box as well.

After sealing your box topper down to your box, now is the time to cut a hole if needed. But be careful to make sure your glue is dry so that the print does not shift while cutting. I would recommend tracing your outline in pencil first and then using a box cutter to cut. Although a very sharp knife will also work just fine.

STEP 4 → Decorating Your Box

For any hoops, nets or players you will be adding, you will want to use the hot glue or craft glue to ensure it remains in the best shape possible on it's travels to school. If you don't already have some you can search for sports cake toppers on Amazon and find a lot of great choices.

Here are the extras I used in the samples shown:

This is a great part for your little one to help with! They will love putting all the players into position to steal some hearts 😍

This is also when I cut some cardstock hearts and we put them around the edge to jazz it up a bit. But if your child has a favorite sports team, you could add some stickers from Amazon of their favorite players. Or purchase a cute Valentine decoration pack at your local convivence store in the craft isles or on Amazon.
